Here's a panorama of an installation I made with the help of some friends last January, at Fresh Paint Gallery in Montreal. I wanna thank Igor Krucko for the panorama, Damien Fumex for the still pictures and Yann Meurot for the description of the project. Here's what he had to say about it:
Upon entering the room, it feels like the fourth of July in America. The Stars and Stripes of the American flag are everywhere. This abundance of patriotic symbols seems a bit excessive to be innocent however... The eagle has two heads, the Catholic cross is merged with the $ sign and the eye above the pyramid seems to be watching us. The enigmatic maxims listed here and there and the various staged objects invite us to reconsider the history of the United States through its unknown facets. The American people are proud of their country's values, they like to display the emblems of the nation. But are the foundations of America so well-meaning that its people believe them? This is an installation I made with the help of a friend for my latest exhibit. I wanted to push further a pop-art concept I made a few years ago, by making it interactive. The piece is built upon two 4' by 6' panels of house insulation panels, glued and nailed together onto a wood panel. I used these materials because I needed something that would allow darts to stick in! On top of that, I pasted some of the sketches I made while I was studiying cartoon animation a few years ago. I used about 30 pages of drawings and pasted them to create somewhat of a brickwall pattern. I later applied acrylic medium, mixed with a few drops of ink to get a vintage look. On top of that, I spray-painted a stencil of a mouse using ebony black and epoxy white. The target is an actual dart board, which was spray painted with stencils to get nice clean red and white circles. The frame is made of wood moldings, spray painted with shiny white epoxy. In the end, visitors could throw darts at my piece during the whole vernissage. Most of them were surprised to be able to attack an artwork... |
